A complete bearing designation communicates more than the boundary dimensions. For procurement teams, understanding the base series, bore code, closure and clearance suffix reduces quotation errors and prevents technically different products from being compared as equivalents.
Start with the bearing series
In common metric deep groove ball bearing designations, the first digits identify the dimensional series. A 6000 series bearing is generally lighter than a comparable 6200 series bearing with the same bore. The correct series must match the housing, shaft and load requirement rather than price alone.
Confirm the bore code and dimensions
For many standard sizes, the last two digits correspond to a coded bore diameter. Buyers should still state the bore, outside diameter and width in millimetres when requesting an interchange check, especially when markings are incomplete or the bearing comes from older equipment.
Add closures and internal clearance
Suffixes such as 2Z or ZZ indicate metal shields, while 2RS commonly indicates rubber seals. C3 identifies greater-than-normal internal clearance. Closure materials, grease, running noise and inspection requirements should be confirmed in the final order code.
